Africatown One Diaspora Gala to Turn Penn Museum into a Showcase of African Heritage, Distinction, and Worldwide Impact
Philadelphia Africatown and ACANA are teaming up with Atelier: Africa for a refined cultural and charitable affair that serves as the grand finale of the 2026 Africatown Summer Series on September 19.
On the evening of Saturday, September 19, 2026, the Penn Museum will host a celebration of African and Diasporic traditions, accomplishments, and worldwide reach as the Africatown One Diaspora Gala brings together ambassadors, corporate and civic figures, entrepreneurs, benefactors, artists, and cultural leaders hailing from Philadelphia and the broader global African Diaspora.
Organized as a joint effort among Philadelphia Africatown, the African Cultural Alliance of North America (ACANA), and Atelier: Africa, the Gala serves as the concluding event of the 2026 Africatown Summer Series, merging Africatown's communal and cultural aspirations with Atelier: Africa's unique perspective on fashion, artistry, culture, and giving back.
Established by Dr. Archima Major, Atelier: Africa operates as a cultural platform that highlights the inventiveness, originality, and worldwide sway of Africa and its Diaspora across fashion, art, design, music, business, and charitable work. Its approach lends a sophisticated cultural dimension to the Gala—curating an experience aimed not just at honoring Diasporic accomplishments, but also at fostering meaningful ties among communities, sectors, and nations.
The program includes live entertainment, fashion showcases, and cultural activities, alongside formal acknowledgment of pioneering leaders and honorees whose efforts demonstrate remarkable influence in business, governance, healthcare, philanthropy, entrepreneurship, arts and culture, and civic engagement. Attendees are encouraged to “Dress to Express and Arrive to Impress!”, weaving fashion and individual flair into the night's commemoration of cultural pride and self-expression.
Kicking off our first press wave and rollout announcements, we are thrilled to feature standout honorees and notable attendees such as Charisse Higgins, Melody Henderson, & Simone Mair (Curly Girl Collective / CURLFEST), Ebun Olaloye (Live Breathe Futbol), Kadidja Dosso (Dosso Beauty), Lisa Francoeur, Set Free, and The Honorable Jannie L. Blackwell, a longtime Philadelphia political leader and committed community supporter, joined by our co-hosts Sonia ‘Barbie’ Tucker, fashion model and social media personality, and Jamila Mustafa, multimedia producer.
Central to the Gala is the theme of One Diaspora, acknowledging that although the African Diaspora extends across countries, cultures, and generations, geography does not diminish shared ancestry or bonds. The night applauds the unique contributions of continental African, African American, Caribbean, Afro-Latin, and other Black Diaspora communities while opening avenues for deeper cultural, civic, and economic collaboration.
“I wanted to walk into a room that felt elevated, beautiful, culturally rich, and unmistakably ours—a space where African and Diasporic excellence was not simply included, but centered,” stated Dr. Archima Major, Founder of Atelier: Africa and Co-Convener of the Gala. “African culture is living, evolving, influencing and shaping the world around us. This Gala is our invitation to experience that power together.” Additionally, the evening will introduce Atelier: Africa's Healthy Leaders, Healthy Cities, Healthy Communities initiative, a campaign designed to convert festivity into action by motivating healthier individuals, stronger governance, and more dynamic neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia.
Serving as more than just a concluding event, the Africatown One Diaspora Gala embodies a joint commitment to deepening connections across the global African Diaspora while establishing Philadelphia and Africatown as a key hub for culture, commerce, creativity, and community life.
