During the livestreamed opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians, the Fields Medals will be awarded. Afterwards, a press conference will take place.
The distinguished Fields Medal winners will be revealed on July 23 at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia. Often referred to as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, this prestigious prize is handed out once every four years.
The formal announcement of the names will take place during the opening ceremony of the ICM, scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon EDT on Thursday, July 23, 2026. Immediately following the ceremony, a press conference and media availability with the medalists will be held from shortly after noon to 1:30 p.m. EDT.

Happening every four years, the ICM features the unveiling of mathematics’ top honors—including the Fields Medals, the Abacus Medal, and the Chern Medal—alongside presentations by prominent mathematicians discussing the latest advancements in the field. A variety of free public events will also allow the general public to engage with the beauty and widespread presence of mathematics.
Journalists who wish to attend in person can register for free to participate in the meeting and the press conference.
This year’s ICM arrives at a crucial moment for mathematics, as artificial intelligence and proof verification tools like Lean are driving the most significant changes in the practice of mathematics in thousands of years. Renowned mathematician and Fields Medal recipient Terence Tao will deliver a public address on this subject, discussing the fundamental essence of why we do math.
