Two-day international gathering in Rome unites thinkers and creators for cross-disciplinary dialogue, scheduled for September 25–26, 2026.
The American University of Rome (AUR) and the Department of Cultures and Societies at Università degli Studi di Palermo (UniPa) are joining forces on September 25–26, 2026, to host “Undisciplined Anthropologies II: Beyond Borders,” a global conference centered on fresh perspectives in anthropology, knowledge production, and cross-disciplinary study.
Set at AUR’s Monteverde campus, this event welcomes the public at no charge, with complimentary entry, giving students, faculty, and local residents the chance to connect with experts and practitioners hailing from universities and organizations throughout Europe and beyond.
Following up on the inaugural Undisciplined Anthropologies gathering, this edition probes what emerges when conventional academic silos are challenged. The “Beyond Borders” theme explores how anthropology might merge with creative arts, digital innovation, environmental studies, political thought, and alternative knowledge systems to forge novel approaches to today’s societal challenges and to envision forward-looking possibilities.
Spanning four panels over two days, the presentations cover a broad spectrum—from multispecies memory, human migration, artistic expression, and cultural heritage to post-humanist thought, algorithmic decision-making, and anthropology’s ties to cutting-edge technology. The agenda showcases the conference’s intentionally broad scope, fostering dialogue among varied methods, fields, and cultural viewpoints.
This event underscores the enduring academic alliance between AUR and UniPa, merging the global networks and scholarly communities of both institutions. AUR President Scott Sprenger, UniPa researcher Stefano Montes, and anthropologist Massimo Canevacci serve as co-organizers, with all three delivering opening and closing remarks across the two-day schedule.
By uniting academics, artists, writers, and researchers from diverse institutional and disciplinary backgrounds, Undisciplined Anthropologies II captures the essence of collaboration: providing spaces where distinct scholarly traditions intersect, challenge each other, and spark innovative ideas.
