A technical presentation will explore how fiber choice, distribution, and compound design influence elastomer performance
Adding short fibers gives compounders an additional method for adjusting rubber properties, yet outcomes hinge on more than just incorporating fiber”— Vishal Chaurasia
Finite Fiber is set to bring a technical spotlight to short-fiber reinforcement at the 2026 Global Polymer Summit, running Sept. 28–30 in Louisville, Kentucky. The company will showcase at Booth 515 and take part in the event’s technical sessions geared toward the rubber, elastomer, and tire sectors.
Technical Director Vishal Chaurasia is scheduled to deliver “From Rubber to Composite: Short Fiber Reinforcement in Elastomer Compounds” on Monday, Sept. 28, from 8:30–8:55 a.m. in Main Concourse, Room M111. This talk falls within the summit’s Advancements in Tire Materials & Compounding track.
The session is designed to examine short-cut fiber reinforcement as a means of extending elastomer compounds beyond conventional rubber recipes, with a strong focus on practical choices in materials and processing.
Short-Fiber Reinforcement in Rubber Compounding
Various synthetic fibers—such as aramid, nylon, polyester, and carbon—along with natural options like cotton and cellulose, can impart distinct performance traits depending on their shape, size, concentration, and alignment within the compound.
This presentation will delve into how these factors affect stress-strain behavior, rigidity, tear and abrasion resistance, and directional properties. It will also tackle one of the trickiest aspects of fiber-filled rubber: ensuring effective stress transfer between the fiber and the surrounding elastomer.
Fiber-matrix adhesion, mechanical interlocking, and chemical bonding are all contributing factors, but the success of reinforcement also hinges heavily on production conditions. Dispersion, handling of low-bulk-density materials, mixing, and formulation balance can determine whether a promising material performs well on an industrial scale.
“Short-fiber reinforcement offers compounders an alternative route to fine-tune rubber performance, but the outcome relies on more than just adding fiber,” Chaurasia noted. “Fiber selection, geometry, dispersion, and the overall formulation must align. This session aims to highlight those practical connections and their application in actual compounds.”
The session will further cover formulation tweaks involving fiber, carbon black, and oil, as well as engineered fiber forms and pelletized masterbatches created to enhance handling and manufacturability. Real-world examples will demonstrate how formulation modifications can achieve targeted performance gains while preserving processability.
Sustainability will also be a topic of discussion, including potential applications for recycled and bio-derived fibers in elastomer products.
Finite Fiber specializes in precision-cut fibers, pulps, and engineered fiber formats used across rubber, plastics, and other industrial sectors. Its work with rubber compounders spans aramid, nylon, polyester, carbon, cotton, and cellulose fibers, plus engineered versions designed to address dosing, dispersion, and processing hurdles.
The Global Polymer Summit offers a venue for these technical conversations to extend beyond the presentation itself. Compounders, engineers, and manufacturers exploring short-cut fibers, aramid pulp, rubber compounding additives, or other reinforcement strategies can connect with the Finite Fiber team at Booth 515 during the entire event.
