Well before an act of violence takes place on school grounds, indicators are often present: a pupil experiencing profound loneliness, growing resentments, contact with extreme online groups, or unaddressed trauma. To assist communities in recognizing and responding to these signals, nationwide specialists from education, behavioral health, law enforcement, and physical security will gather at Connected & Protected: The Education to Action School Safety Summit 2026, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026, in Philadelphia.
Hosted by Allegion US, a top supplier of security solutions, technology, and services, this single-day national summit will occur at Cyto Smartspace at Cira Centre. The agenda aims to shift the national conversation on school safety past crisis response, giving attendees useful methods to stop violence, boost student engagement, enhance behavioral threat assessment, and create safer physical settings.

Intervention Prior to a Crisis
As school communities face a complex array of dangers—including targeted violence, suicide, cyber threats, and online radicalization—the summit will concentrate on actions that can be taken before an emergency occurs. Attendees will explore how early worries are reported, assessed, and managed, and how data can be exchanged responsibly across different systems.
“School safety does not fall on one principal, one counselor, one officer, or one security setup,” said Christin Kinman, MPH, CPTED, an Allegion security consultant and summit organizer. “It requires a linked network of educators, clinicians, families, public safety personnel, and community groups who know their duties and are ready to collaborate. This summit aims to help people connect the data, resources, and relationships that can avert a crisis and shield a young individual.”
National Presentations on Threat Evaluation and Radicalization
The summit will showcase prominent voices in violence prevention and deradicalization:
• Dr. Melissa M. Nelson, a nationwide K-12 school safety and threat assessment authority linked to the University of Pittsburgh, will deliver “Leading Before the Crisis: Coordinated BTAM That Prevents Violence.” Drawing on actual targeted violence incidents, Nelson will explain how Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) enables multidisciplinary teams to examine concerns and lower danger.
• Allizandra Herberhold, LMSW, a deradicalization interventionist and proprietor of Seeking Safer Pathways LLC, will present “Radicalization in Real Time: What Schools Must See and Stop.” She will address changing online extremist communities and introduce methods for spotting risk and stepping in before ideology moves toward violence.
• Dr. Bruno Dias, Ph.D., CTM, PCI, a national authority on violence prevention and behavioral threat assessment, will offer a practical view of how multidisciplinary teams can detect troubling behavior, evaluate risk, and halt a potential path toward violence. Though hosted in Philadelphia, the summit tackles issues faced nationwide. Breakout sessions and case studies—including one guided by violence prevention expert Dr. Bruno Dias—will cover trauma-informed responses, mental health understanding, physical security, smart credentials, and strategic security investments for tight budgets.
The summit is intended for superintendents, school administrators, teachers, counselors, behavioral threat assessment teams, school resource officers, mental health professionals, law enforcement, and community groups.
