Through the Looking Glass Shines a Spotlight on the Acclaimed Artist’s Rabbits, Butterflies, Color, and Diamond Dust
NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, August 24, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Hunt Slonem’s signature realm—filled with rabbits, butterflies, birds, and radiant hues—lands at One Art Space in Tribeca this summer through “Through the Looking Glass,” an exhibition that assembles pieces showcasing the repetition, flow, and nature-inspired obsession that define the celebrated American neo-expressionist creator.
The show runs from Friday, August 21st through Monday, September 28th, 2026, with an opening reception scheduled for early September at One Art Space. Marking Slonem’s first New York City exhibition in five years, the collection shifts between grand scale and intimate detail—from sweeping canvases filled with his recurring natural motifs to gem-like paintings presented almost as precious objects. At its heart hangs “Pink Ascension” (2021), a monumental 77-by-101-inch oil on canvas where butterflies float across a luminous pink background, turning one of Slonem’s most iconic themes into an immersive exploration of rhythm, pattern, and motion.
On the opposite end of the scale sits “Blue Hutch” (2025), a 20-by-24-inch oil on wood featuring a cluster of Slonem’s instantly identifiable rabbits set against a vivid blue backdrop. Housed in an ornate frame, the piece captures the playful tension present throughout Slonem’s oeuvre: spontaneous brushwork and seemingly straightforward subjects arranged in compositions that feel simultaneously contemporary, decorative, and almost sacred.
These two works define the boundaries of a broader exhibition that spans Slonem’s visual lexicon. Butterflies reappear in pieces such as “Red Sea Migration III” (2026), “Silver Ascension Travel Tomorrow” (2022), and “White Ascension (August Moon)” (2026), while his celebrated rabbits multiply across canvases and smaller works including “Blue Rhapsody Diamond Dust” (2023), “Totem Fluffle” (2026), and “Pink Pair” (2026). The presentation also reaches beyond painting to incorporate Slonem’s sculptural pieces, reflecting the range of a practice where familiar forms are endlessly revisited through shifts in size, material, color, and texture.

Repetition lies at the core of Slonem’s practice. Drawing inspiration from nature and the exotic birds he surrounds himself with, the artist has spent decades returning to rabbits, butterflies, and tropical birds, forging a distinct visual language marked by textured brushwork, intense color, and repeated shapes. Slonem has described his fascination with the patterns found throughout nature—from feathers and leaves to blades of grass—as essential to this method.
