This appointment, confirmed on 7 August 2026 by Fondazione ENIA President Valeria Lazzaroli, assigns Buonsante the role of leading a Research and Development project dedicated to the ethical application of artificial intelligence across hospitality, tourism and related fields.

The initiative will foster studies, models, methodologies, experiments, training programs and innovative efforts that convert AI from a fast-moving technology into tangible, responsible value for hospitality organizations.

Its scope may cover applied research, AI governance, organizational innovation, AI risk management, specialist training, operational guidelines, use cases, scientific and educational materials, along with domestic and international networking.

Initial Focus Areas

The Commission’s early priorities will include:

AI literacy for hotel managers, professionals and operational staff;
practical frameworks for the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence;
AI risk management models tailored to hospitality and tourism;
the influence of AI on guest experience and service personalization;
the changing role of the General Manager in organizations increasingly supported by intelligent systems.

The institutional mandate is intentionally wide-ranging. It covers hospitality, tourism and connected services, while exploring how technology, data, reputation, operational workflows, security and human interaction can be integrated within a unified management model.

“The real challenge is not simply deploying more AI, but governing it effectively: improving decision-making, minimizing friction and safeguarding the profoundly human essence of hospitality,” stated Buonsante.

“The essential question is not how many systems a hotel can implement, but where AI can enhance decisions, eliminate friction and support individuals without compromising accountability or the human quality of service. The Commission aims to convert discussion into research, methods, guidelines, use cases and learning resources that the sector can put into practice.”

Hospitality as a Real-World Laboratory for AI

Hospitality stands out as one of the most insightful environments for studying artificial intelligence. A hotel brings together marketing, distribution, reputation, revenue management, personalization, information security, operational processes, workforce development and direct human interactions with guests.

AI can assist in analyzing inquiries and reviews, managing information, facilitating multilingual communication, generating content, improving process efficiency and supporting certain decision-making tasks. Its adoption also raises issues around data quality, privacy, reliability, transparency, accountability, cybersecurity and maintaining guest trust.

Accordingly, the Commission will treat AI not merely as a technology initiative, but as a managerial and organizational challenge. Its efforts will link innovation, literacy, governance, risk and quality of experience, fostering dialogue among hotel operators, tourism organizations, researchers, professional bodies, technology vendors, public institutions and other stakeholders.

Special attention will be given to the distinction between automation and augmentation. In an industry built on care, judgment, recognition and attention to detail, the goal is not to eliminate human involvement, but to leverage technology so that people have more time and better information to serve guests.
