Acclaimed author breathes new life into the remarkable story of Honora O’Flynn, drawing from the Irish woman’s abduction by pirates and voyage to colonial Maryland
Could a path forged through adversity turn into an inheritance of optimism? Carrying forward the narrative started in The Indenture of Ivy O’Neill, celebrated author Diane Helentjaris’ Ivy in America (The Life and Adventures of Ivy O'Neill) envisions Honora O’Flynn Logsdon’s path through the trials of colonial America and the fortitude that turned her history into a beacon of hope for future generations.
“I find Honora’s life so compelling, which led me to develop the Ivy series. My goal is to give readers an entertaining and lasting experience with Ivy, her resilience, and her resolve. Her impact on Maryland’s past is substantial, as are the inheritances left by many of her offspring,” states Helentjaris.
Released on August 28, 2026, Ivy in America represents the newest addition to Helentjaris’ Ivy series. Honora O’Flynn, portrayed as a red-haired beauty, was abducted by pirates off Ireland’s coast and transported to colonial Maryland. There, it is said she was traded to farmer William Logsdon in exchange for a large hogshead of tobacco.
Subsequently, the historical evidence started to validate the family legend.
“The trafficking of young women saddened me deeply, along with the apparent absence of control Honora had over her future, and the grief this likely inflicted on her and the loved ones she left behind in Ireland,” Helentjaris remarks.
Yet Honora’s tale did not conclude with her arrival in America. Her bravery and faith shaped upcoming generations, among them William Durbin, who played a role in founding the Methodist Church and made his own imprint on America’s spiritual heritage.
“The image of a woman surmounting difficulty and leaving a legacy of guidance and belief captivated me,” Helentjaris says.
That image evolved into the core of Ivy in America. Anchored in verified history, Helentjaris employs narrative skill and her own creativity to animate Honora’s story, bridging the gaps in historical records to uncover the individual behind it—and the existence she might have forged following such a terrifying start.
“I aimed to deduce what kind of person she might have become,” Helentjaris explains. “I sought to imagine how a woman and her spouse could build unity after such a difficult beginning, to pass down the gift of belief and charitable deeds.”
Online archives have revolutionized the safeguarding of women’s history, unlocking sources that previously demanded extensive hours in libraries and archives. Helentjaris acknowledges these tools for aiding her research, such as the inaugural biography of Lulu Bell Parr, “I Ain’t Afraid: The World of Lulu Bell Parr, Wild West Cowgirl.” For Helentjaris, historical storytelling reaches beyond mere reflection. It involves uncovering women whose narratives nearly vanished, and restoring their lives, voices, and contributions to the forefront for a fresh audience.
“The work I undertake is pleasurable, but it is also vital,” Helentjaris notes. “These women bequeathed a legacy that still influences their community and the world around us today, and that ought not to be overlooked.”
Helentjaris is scheduled to attend several upcoming author gatherings, such as the 85th Waterford Fair from October 2–4, the Yellow Springs Street Fair in Ohio on October 10, and the 3rd Annual Crozet Book Fest on October 24 at the Crozet Public Library.
