AI Assistant Market Booms: ChatGPT Hits 1 Billion Users as Gemini and Claude Surge

The artificial intelligence assistant market has exploded to unprecedented scale, according to Sensor Tower’s comprehensive State of AI 2026 report released Monday. ChatGPT has become the fastest-growing app in history to reach 1 billion monthly active users, achieving the milestone in just three years — a feat that outpaced even social media giants like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.

OpenAI’s flagship product now boasts 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers, with annualized revenue soaring to $25 billion. The achievement reflects an extraordinary level of mainstream adoption for AI technology that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago.

While ChatGPT leads with a 46.4% market share as of May 2026, the real story is the explosive growth across the entire ecosystem. Google’s Gemini has emerged as a formidable competitor with 27.7% market share and 662 million monthly users, while Anthropic’s Claude has captured 10.3% of the market with 245 million users — a figure that has more than tripled in the United States alone, driven largely by strong web traffic growth.

The overall AI assistant market is experiencing remarkable expansion. In the first half of 2026, consumers are on pace to download 2.3 billion AI applications and spend over $4.2 billion on them — numbers that underscore how deeply AI tools have penetrated everyday digital life. Cloud submissions to AI platforms have more than doubled compared to six months ago.

The competitive landscape has catalyzed rapid innovation, with companies across the AI spectrum racing to improve their offerings. DeepSeek has also gained significant traction, and together with ChatGPT and Gemini, these three platforms account for nearly 90% of total time spent on AI assistant apps in Q1 2026.

Both OpenAI and Anthropic are preparing for major public listings, with OpenAI targeting a potential $1 trillion valuation and Anthropic having closed its latest funding round at $965 billion. These financial milestones signal investor confidence in the long-term value of AI technology as it continues to reshape how people work, learn, and communicate.
